Once
threatened with extinction, our National bird has been making a
slow comeback, thanks to conservation efforts. Midwinter is the
best time to spot bald eagles in the Pinelands. In the 60's and
70's the eagle population dropped to an all time low. Only one eagle
nest was known in the State of New Jersey. This was due to the harmful
pesticides being used. Luckily the chemical was banned in 1972.
The damage was already done. It took about ten years before the
bald eagles were producing young again. Now we have about 176 bald
eagles in the State.
